Ladbrokes has the largest betting shop estate of any brand in the United Kingdom, and it is the only one of the big three with a significant presence in Northern Ireland. Since 2016 it has been part of the same group as Coral, and since 2018 both have been owned by Entain. This page sets out what the company’s own published data tells us about its shops, and the regulatory and company facts worth knowing.

Our Ladbrokes data comes from the company’s shop locator, which publishes an address, coordinates and seven-day hours for each shop. The locator listed 1,370 shops when we collected it. We hold back ten of them: in each case the map coordinates published by Ladbrokes place the shop hundreds of kilometres from its own postcode, so we cannot be confident which is right. Those ten are queued for a manual check rather than shown with a possibly wrong pin. Six further shops appear without any hours; their pages say “Hours unavailable” rather than guessing.

London accounts for one Ladbrokes shop in every seven. The Northern Ireland estate of 73 shops, with Belfast and Derry both in the top ten, distinguishes Ladbrokes from William Hill and Coral, neither of which lists shops there. Search by postcode in the shop finder or browse the town pages.
Opening hours
Ladbrokes shops show more variety in their hours than William Hill’s. Just under half (666 shops, 49%) close at 22:00 on weekdays; 216 close at 21:00, 200 at 21:30, and a sizeable group of 207 shops close earlier, at 19:00 or 20:00, typically in smaller towns and suburban parades. Opening times cluster at 08:30 (415 shops), 09:00 (393) and 08:00 (294), with 219 shops opening at 09:30 or 10:00.
Sunday is where the range is widest. The most common pattern is a full day, 09:00 to 22:00, in 159 shops, but almost as many shops (113) run 09:00 to 19:00 and another 110 open at 09:30 and close at 19:00. Thirty shops in our data have no Sunday hours published, which may mean they are closed on Sunday or that the source omitted them; we show “Hours unavailable” for those rather than “Closed”. Check the individual shop page before a Sunday visit.
These are standard published hours. Ladbrokes’ locator does not publish bank holiday or event-day hours. Shops in Great Britain do not open on Christmas Day; Northern Ireland shops follow separate licensing rules and are also closed on Christmas Day.
Licence and regulation
Ladbrokes’ shops are operated by Ladbrokes Betting & Gaming Limited, Gambling Commission account number 1611, with its head office at One Stratford Place, Montfichet Road, London E20 1EJ. Its non-remote general betting licence has been active since 1 January 2009. The same company holds the remote licences for ladbrokes.com. Northern Ireland shops are licensed separately under the Betting, Gaming, Lotteries and Amusements (Northern Ireland) Order 1985, administered by local courts and councils rather than the Gambling Commission.
In July 2019 the Gambling Commission announced that Ladbrokes Coral Group would pay £5.9 million for anti-money-laundering and social-responsibility failings between 2014 and 2017, before the group was bought by GVC. The Commission’s regulatory action register lists the details. We note it here for completeness; it predates the current ownership and the current shop estate.
Ownership and history
Ladbrokes is the oldest name in British bookmaking. It began in 1886 as a commission agency for horses trained at Ladbroke Hall in Warwickshire, took the Ladbrokes name in 1902 and for its first seventy years served a wealthy private clientele. Betting shops became legal in 1961 and, under Cyril Stein, the company built a chain from under 50 shops in 1967 to more than 1,100 by 1973.
The company bought Coral in 1998 but was ordered to sell it again the following year on competition grounds. The two finally merged in November 2016 as Ladbrokes Coral Group, after the Competition and Markets Authority required around 360 shops to be sold. GVC Holdings bought Ladbrokes Coral in March 2018 and renamed itself Entain in December 2020.
As with every large operator, the reduction of the maximum fixed-odds betting terminal stake to £2 in April 2019 led to shop closures; Ladbrokes Coral announced up to 1,000 across its brands in 2019. The Ladbrokes estate has since stabilised at around 1,370 shops.

Because the two brands share an owner, systems and head office, they often sit a few doors apart on the same high street, a legacy of the merger.
