Betfred

Betfred is the largest independently owned bookmaker on the British high street. Its shops are operated by Done Brothers (Cash Betting) Limited, trading as Betfred, part of Betfred Group Limited, which remains owned by the Done family.

Shops on BookieFinder

BookieFinder does not yet list individual Betfred shops. Our shop data is taken from each bookmaker’s official shop locator, and Betfred’s locator has not yet been collected. We are working on it and will add the shops, with their published opening hours and a collection date, as soon as the collection has been run and checked. Until then the shop finder covers William Hill, Ladbrokes and Coral only, and any town page that shows no Betfred shops should not be read as meaning the town has none.

For a sense of scale: the Gambling Commission’s public register listed 1,415 licensed premises for Done Brothers (Cash Betting) Limited when we checked on 21 September 2026. That figure counts premises licences, which is not identical to trading shops, but it indicates that Betfred’s estate is larger than any of the three brands currently on the site.

The “ancillary remote” licence covers betting on machines or devices within the shops themselves rather than a website; Betfred’s online business is licensed separately under a different company.

Regulatory action

On 7 November 2025 the Gambling Commission recorded a sanction against Done Brothers (Cash Betting) Limited following a license review. The Commission found breaches of license condition 12.1.1 on anti-money-laundering controls between May 2024 and March 2025, and a failure to comply with social responsibility code provision 3.4.1 on customer interaction between May 2024 and November 2024. The outcome was a warning, a financial penalty of £825,000 and an additional condition attached to the operating license. The register notes that the licensee co-operated throughout. The full decision is on the Commission’s regulatory action register under the account number above.

We record this because a licence history is part of understanding who runs a shop; it is not a rating and we do not rank bookmakers on it.

Company background

Betfred was founded by brothers Fred and Peter Done, who opened their first shop in Salford in 1967. The business grew through the north west of England before expanding nationally, including the purchase of the Tote’s shop estate from the government in 2011, which added several hundred shops. Unlike William Hill, Ladbrokes and Coral, Betfred is not part of a listed group; it remains privately held.

Betfred shops carry the brand’s blue and red livery and, like other licensed betting shops in Great Britain, are limited to four gaming machines with a £2 maximum stake per play. Age policy in shops is Think 25.

If you run or use a Betfred shop and want to tell us about it before our collection is complete, please contact us. We will hold the information and check it against the official source when the collection runs; we do not publish individual shops from user reports alone.
